Victorian homes are renown for their intricate and diverse architectural styles, featuring roofs that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. A hallmark of many Victorian residences is the turret, a tower-like element often topped with a conical or polygonal roof. This 1894 Queen Anne Victorian home we recently re-roofed featured a similar structure. These turrets, which rise above the main roofline, impart a charming castle-like quality and can also function as unique interior spaces. Additionally, the home included sections of flat roofs alongside steeply sloped ones. While these slopes enhance the home’s dramatic silhouette, we ensured that functionality was maintained.
We installed TAMKO Heritage shingles in the shade of Old English Pewter. The choice of shingles not only complements the historic nature of the home but also provides a durable and weather-resistant surface, ensuring the longevity of the roof. As we worked on the project, we took great care to preserve the unique character of the home, matching materials and styles as closely as possible to the original design. The attention to detail in every aspect of the re-roofing process was paramount, from the selection of materials to the precision of the installation.
For the flat roof section of the roof, we installed EDPM. This will safeguard against water pooling and ensure effective drainage, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the roof over time. EDPM, known for its flexibility and resilience, offers excellent protection against the elements, making it an ideal choice for areas prone to water accumulation.
The combination of these varied roof styles within a single Victorian home highlights the era’s love for complexity and ornate design, resulting in a visually captivating and historically rich architectural tapestry.
Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with the homeowners to ensure that their vision for the restoration was realized. We provided them with regular updates and welcomed their input, creating a partnership that respected both the historical significance of the property and the modern needs of its occupants.
The completed project stands as a testament to the timeless beauty and enduring appeal of Victorian architecture, inviting admiration from passersby and offering a warm, welcoming environment for its residents. As stewards of such historic treasures, we take pride in preserving these architectural gems for future generations to enjoy.
